Dec 26, 2009: Road Safety Week will be observed in Tamil Nadu from January 1 to 7, with various campaigns to raise public awareness on safe driving. The focus is to bring down road accidents that claim an estimated one lakh victims every year.

The observance will feature road safety meetings, panel discussions on the electronic media, slogan contests, exhibitions, distribution of pamphlets and eyesight screening camps.

Public announcements at busy intersections, improving display of signage at vantage points and refresher courses for drivers of State transport undertakings are part of the campaign. Special programmes for school / college students and traffic training for children are also proposed.
